While SWAN provides cataloging services, support for cataloging libraries, and documentation on local cataloging practices, it does not offer formal cataloging training to member library staff. Below is a non-exhaustive list of resources staff can use to increase their knowledge of cataloging principles and standards. They are separated by those that are free to member library staff and those that are paid. They are organized alphabetically in each section. Inclusion on the list should not be interpreted as a SWAN endorsement of the training or services. Similarly, a resource not being included on this list should not be taken as a reflection on the services and trainings other organizations may provide. 

Free to SWAN Member Library Staff

Cataloging Maintenance Center of the Illinois Heartland Library System (CMC): CMC offers a large calendar of free one-day and multi-day training opportunities for Illinois library staff

LACONI Technical Services Section: Hosts four continuing education, professional development, and networking programs per year for Technical Services Librarians and other interested persons

Library Foundational Training (LiFT): Library Catalog Series: A series of four courses that provide a general introduction to MARC records and the basics of cataloging

Library of Congress PCC Introductory RDA Training Webinars: Recordings of eleven webinars presented by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) that provide an opportunity for those interested in learning official RDA

OCLC Connexion client is the cataloging access to the OCLC system and its records. The website has many resources available for how to use this software, but some highlights for SWAN libraries include:

RAILS Cataloging Training: A landing page for a variety of resources within and beyond RAILS for catalogers. A highlight of some of the listed resources are included below

  • RAILS Upcoming Training: A list of upcoming trainings on a variety of topics. This is not exclusive to cataloging, but it is an easy way to find upcoming trainings rather than recordings of past trainings
  • RAILS Academy: Previous courses and webinar recordings that are available to library staff can be found in the RAILS Academy. An account is required but all trainings are free to staff affiliated with a RAILS member library
  • iCamp Illinois Cataloging Mentorship Program: A 9-month mentorship framework designed to facilitate professional and personal development among its participants

 

Paid Options for Library Staff

Amigos Library Services: Amigos offers a range of courses on basic to advanced cataloging topics. Each training has its own specific topic and registration cost

Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS): Virtual workshops on a variety of cataloging topics. Each training has its own specific topic and registration cost
