Weeklies

How weeklies work

SWAN Bibliographic Services will create new records for the Weekly titles that require this treatment in the Fall of the preceding year. If you receive an issue that needs to be added to a Weekly bibliographic record that has not yet been created, please send in a ticket. Do not create a Weekly bibliographic record yourself.

The term "Weeklies" is a catch-all term for these titles, but they are not all published weekly. Certain less frequent periodicals are collected by enough SWAN libraries that their number of attached items warranted this treatment.

Weekly titles will contain the year in brackets after the title in the 245 field. The fixed field dates on weekly title are altered to match the appropriate year. This improves search relevancy. More recent versions of weekly titles should appear higher in search results in both WorkFlows and the catalog.

Weekly titles also contain a local subject heading to assist searching:

690    Weeklies.

Issues attached to a title's yearly record correspond to the earliest printed date on the serial. For example, and issue dated "December 31,2026- January 6, 2027" should appear on the 2026 record.

If you would like to suggest a title to be added to the Weeklies list, please send in a ticket.

SWAN Bibliographic Services will create and release a list of these records each Fall for the upcoming year. Please keep item records on their appropriate record. Serial control records will need to be transferred to the new bibliographic records or remade.

If you opt for transferring the serial control to the upcoming year, you can do so after all issues for the current year have been received. 

Weekly serials 2027

SWAN staff regularly evaluate the titles that are part of our annual weeklies list. Due to changes to publication frequency and the number of libraries with subscriptions to these titles, many titles from 2026 are not on the 2027 list. The bibliographic record for the 2026 titles that are not on the 2027 weeklies list will be updated to be the full serial record. This allows members utilizing Serial Control in WorkFlows to continue using the same record without needing to transfer or modify their Serial Control records for these titles. Please reference the 2026 table for these title control numbers as needed.
